The Heat Release Rate is the single most important property predicting fire hazard, since it governs both the rate of fire growth and its maximum intensity. The Cone Calorimeter represents an important advance in laboratory-scale fire testing of polymeric materials and composites. The Cone Calorimeter can simulate a range of fire intensities.
At a heat flux level of 25 KWm-2 the Cone can simulate an initial fire growth model
At a heat flux level of 50 KWm-2 the Cone can simulate a developed fire growth model
At a heat flux level of 75 KWm-2 the Cone can simulate a fully developed or “flashover” fire growth model
It has been shown to provide data which correlates well with those from full-scale fire tests. Although primarily designed to measure rates of heat release, most commercial Cone Calorimeter instruments are equipped to measure several other important fire parameters.
Key Cone Calorimeter Heat Release Rate Service parameters considered are:
The Cone Calorimeter can also provide data used to calculate MAHRE and FIGRA values.
The Cone data and associated ConeTools™ software can be used to help predict how samples may behave in the larger SBI (Single Burning Item, EN 13823) or Room Corner Tests.
The Cone Calorimeter is subject to the following standards:
Sample dimensions: 100mm x 100mm x up to 50mm thick.
